Video Veneris

It's late for my Video Veneris, for sure, but maybe you're like me and spent a good bit of the day out swimming (I've spent so many of them like that lately because it's too hot to do anything else--even for our a/c to keep up)...

Angie Frazier's Everlasting is a great book and here's the trailer for it if my review from May (it released June 1) didn't quite convince you yet that you should read it :D

SYNC Audiobook downloads

An awesome website/program has been set up this summer. SYNC is offering up one classic book (like Treasure Island) and one new/modern YA book (like Wondrous Strange) as an audio book download each week. Each set of books is available for download for seven days (from Thursday through Wednesday). Listening to some of the classic books is not only a great way to find out you actually might like them but probably a way to help with your summer reading list :-D

They're in MP3 format and play through the OverDrive player (like the MP3 audio books you can download from a lot of libraries--if I ever find the place I found that lists which states/counties allow what, I'll link it.). I believe they'll also play on MP3 players, too, though.

Here's a list of just some of the books that are available:

Available July 15 - July 21
Bloody Jack by L.A. Meyer
Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson

Available July 22 - July 28
The Looking Glass Wars by Frank Beddor
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll

Available July 29 - August 4
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
The Lottery by Shirley Jackson

(How? On the SYNC page I linked to there's a page for readers and a page for librarian's & bloggers that explains how it all works and gives links to the downloads, etc)

This is something I'm going to be taking advantage of and I hope some of you will as well!

Waiting on Wednesday

One book I can hardly wait for (even though it's only a little while longer that I have to) is Girl Parts by John M Cusick that releases on August 10.

Here's the synopsis via Goodreads:
"Hello, David. My name is Rose. It’s a pleasure to meet you. We are now entering minute two of our friendship. According to my Intimacy Clock, a handshake is now appropriate…"

David and Charlie are opposites. David has a million friends, online and off. Charlie is a soulful outsider, off the grid completely. But neither feels close to anybody. When David’s parents present him with a hot Companion bot to encourage healthy bonds and treat "dissociative disorder," he can’t get enough of luscious red-headed Rose — and he can’t get it soon. Companions come with strict intimacy protocols, and whenever he tries anything, David gets an electric shock. Severed from the boy she was built to love, Rose turns to Charlie, who finds he can open up, knowing Rose isn’t real. With Charlie’s help, the ideal "companion" is about to become her own best friend. In a stunning and hilarious debut, John Cusick takes rollicking aim at internet culture and our craving for meaningful connection in an uber-connected world.
Sounds awesome, yes?

The cover reminds me a bit of something they did a long time ago on America's Next Top Model... See?
(sorry I couldn't seem to find a better version of it.)
I do love the cover, though. The idea of the girl in the box seems to represent the book rather perfectly...and a sort of robot that can't really be intimate with the person it's created for at all is also pretty perfect (& for a book. Especially a YA one). I also just love the idea of the shocks.

Can't wait to read it.

So, that's the book I'm Waiting On today, Girl Parts by John M Cusick, out 10th August in hardcover from Candlewick Press, Amazon buy link.

In My Mailbox Monday

for review:

Wicked Girls by Stephanie Hemphill& Infinite Days by Rebecca Maizel (from LibraryThing Early Reviewers)

Wicked Girls: A Novel of the Salem Witch Trials (June 29):
What started out as girls' games became a witch hunt. Wicked Girls is a fictionalized account of the Salem witch trials told from the perspectives of three of the real young women living in Salem in 1692.

Ann Putnam Jr. plays the queen bee. When her father suggests that a spate of illnesses within the village is the result of witchcraft, Ann grasps her opportunity. She puts in motion a chain of events that will change the lives of the people around her forever.

Mercy Lewis, the beautiful servant in Ann's house, inspires adulation in some and envy in others. With a troubled past, she seizes her only chance at safety.

Margaret Walcott, Ann's cousin, is desperately in love and consumed with fiery jealousy. She is torn between staying loyal to her friends and pursuing the life she dreams of with her betrothed.

With new accusations mounting daily against the men and women of the community, the girls will have to decide: Is it too late to tell the truth? (Amazon.com)

Infinite Days (Vampire Queen) (Aug 3):
"Throughout all my histories, I found no one I loved more than you...no one."

Those were some of Rhode's last words to me. The last time he would pronounce his love. The last time I would see his face.

It was the first time in 592 years I could take a breath. Lay in the sun. Taste.

Rhode sacrificed himself so I, Lenah Beaudonte, could be human again. So I could stop the blood lust.

I never expected to fall in love with someone else that wasn't Rhode.

But Justin was...daring. Exciting. More beautiful than I could dream.

I never expected to be sixteen again...then again, I never expected my past to come back and haunt me... (Amazon.com)

(So glad my modem started working again in time for this post . . . having one that quits for hours/days whenever it loses power at all is not good when strong thunderstorms are an almost daily occurrence ;))

A Dog's Purpose ~ W Bruce Cameron

A Dog's Purpose
Forge Books
July 6, 2010
320 Pages
Buy @ Amazon

A Dog's Purpose is told from a a dog's first person point of view. It's one dog, but one who lives many lifetimes--reincarnation, of sorts. We meet the dog living his first life as Toby a dog who starts out as a wild dog with his puppy siblings and his mother. He's captured and taken to either a woman's unlicensed rescue or the home of a woman who owns forty-ish dogs (I couldn't tell if she just owned a crap load of dogs or had a really unorganized rescue type thing).

Through the different lives, the dog decides that he's supposed to be finding his purpose. He uses things he's learned in each life to help him in each successive one. Little things like knowing how to open a gate becoming very useful to him as he cumulatively builds his skill set.

Because telling much (if anything) about the dogs later lives would spoil the earlier lives for anyone reading, this really isn't very detailed on purpose. It's a very endearing book, though. Each of the dogs lives are different, placing the dog in a different situation with different experiencs. A Dog's Purpose is very well written and it's very believeable that a dog is the one telling the story--not a person pretending to be a dog. Some of the observations from the dog (be they about the cats the dog encounters or in the different lives or about 'school') are very creative and truly very 'dog-like'.

As someone who loves dogs I found this book very touching and it brought up memories of my dogs. I don't know if someone who doesn't like dogs would enjoy the book as much, but I also don't know why the book would really appeal to them in the first place, so . . .

I definitely recommend this book if you ever wonder what your dog is thinking, if you love your dog, if you miss your dog, or if you even just love dogs but don't have one. Do know though that it did make me cry.

10/10

The Secret to Lying ~ Todd Mitchell review

The Secret to Lying
Candlewick Press
336 Pages
June 8, 2010
Buy @ Amazon

When 15-year-old James gets accepted into American Science and Mathematics Academy, a boarding school, for the start of his sophomore year he takes the opportunity to reinvent himself. Gone will be the nearly invisible James that no one will remember once high school is over and in his place is a new James, an adventure loving, car stealing, street fighting James--created by lies. Known across the school now, dating a cool Junior and reviled as the cool kid among all the nerds at the school, James should have a perfect life.

But he doesn't. Between nightmares of fighting demons, cutting himself, and event after event that lead to relationship after relationship (of all sorts) ending, and 'perfect girl' Ellie refusing to notice him or care about him, James' life seems to be coming apart.

The Secret to Lying is a coming of age story that I'm really glad I got from Early Reviewers because I more than likely wouldn't have picked it up otherwise. James is a really well written character who really is taking the opportunity away from home (at an early age than most get the opportunity) to reinvent himself. It's only after he's living his new life and doing what he thinks he really wants to do that he starts to feel the consequences of his lies and not being himself.

I think that the story was very well written--showing James progress from getting to ASMA, to creating his new persona and all that came with it, to the end. The secondary characters and their stories added to the plot (and James' story) too while being interesting in and of themselves.

The part that I don't think worked so well were the nightmares that he had and the little alternate world created by them. I know that the dreams James was having (and his battles within them) were supposed to mirror his inner turmoil/give it a sort of physical manifestation, but it never completely connected for me. It always seemed like there was just that last piece that needed to be added/written for the connection to be there (or be great).

I think that this is a great book with a male main character, YA especially and one that will appeal to boys but also to girls.

8/10

Daily Show & Colbert Report Reading Challenge

The Daily Show (with Jon Stewart) and the Colbert Report almost always seem to have some very interesting book featured--books that I say at the time, "Oooh, I want to read that!" but then forget about before actually doing so. Most of the books are also nonfiction books or memoirs and I don't read nearly enough of those so I came up with The Daily Show & Colbert Report Reading Challenge.

I've compiled a list of the books that were featured/talked about/discussed by their author on the two shows from July of last year until today (and I'm going to keep updating the list) and I'm issuing a challenge for myself and you. . .

Challenge Levels:
Bronze Level: Read Two of the Books
Silver Leveld: Read Five of the Books
Gold Level: Read Ten of the Books
Diamond Level: Read Fifteen of the Books
Platinum Level: Read Twenty-Five (or more!) of the Books

The Challenge Runs from Today (July 4, 2010) for One Year (Until July 3, 2011)

as of now there's no prize other than you'll be more educated and hopefully really, really proud of yourself (like I said, I'm not good at reading nonfiction books)...

I have set up an Amazon Associates Store with all of the books H E R E. Books from both show are organized by year (2009 & 2010) to make it easier to look through and each show's main page has books by the show's host as well--though they're just bonus books and not part of the challenge!).

Here are the 150 (so far!) books from which you have to to choose--you can pick from just one show or mix and match--or set a goal for each :)
